Finding Your Global Market: Wine, Vinyl Records, and Virtual STEM Services
At Black Tech Link, we believe global trade should be accessible, practical, and achievable for all entrepreneurs. In a recent strategy session, we helped three unique small businesses begin mapping their path to international growth—through data-driven market research, industry classification codes, and export tools.
This candid, educational conversation covered three niche sectors: wine distribution, vinyl records, and virtual STEM education services. While distinct in their offerings, each business faced the same initial challenge: Where is my best market, and how do I get there?
🍷 Case Study 1: California Wine Distribution
A client based in Northern California wanted to explore export markets for flavored wine. Using the HS code 2205, we tapped into the U.S. Census Bureau’s Schedule B system and the International Trade Administration’s Trade Stats Express.
Here’s what we found:
U.S. exports of wine under code 2205 dropped significantly from $45M in 2018 to $18M in 2024
Top national markets: Cayman Islands, Hong Kong, Mexico, Spain, Bermuda
State-level data for California (using NICS code 3121) told a different story—export numbers were far stronger
Top California export markets for wine: Canada ($519M), UK, China, Japan, South Korea
“For this client, California-specific data matters more than national averages. Wine is deeply tied to regional production, and knowing where your state excels gives you a strategic edge.”
We also discussed deeper datasets like PIERS, which can show exactly which companies are exporting from California’s ports and which international buyers they’re shipping to.
🎵 Case Study 2: Vinyl Record Sales
Another client was focused on exporting vinyl records—a more niche, analog product that required careful HS code selection. After searching Schedule B and cross-referencing Chapter 85 of the tariff codes, the correct classification appeared to be 8523.80.1000 for phonograph records.
Using this code, we explored:
Top U.S. export markets: Mexico, Canada, China, Netherlands, Taiwan
Some confusion with HS code 8523 referring to “prepared unrecorded media” emphasized the need to confirm HS codes with a licensed customs broker
For more granular targeting, the use of 10-digit codes is essential—especially when determining whether media is recorded or unrecorded
“Vinyl is an example of a unique product where general data won’t cut it. The more specific your code, the more accurate your strategy.”
🧑🏽‍🏫 Case Study 3: Virtual STEM Education
Our third client offers STEM-based construction education services delivered virtually. Exporting services (especially digital ones) is different from products—but opportunities still abound.
Using Trade Map, we searched the “Personal, Cultural, Recreational & Educational Services” category. While the data only extended to 2022, it showed:
Steady growth in global demand for U.S. educational services
Top importing markets in alphabetical order, including China, Germany, Canada, Mexico, and UAE
The need for better tools to drill down into niche services like STEM education and public contracting
Â
We advised this client to prepare for Black Tech Link’s upcoming government procurement workshop, where they can learn how to identify relevant bid opportunities based on their niche.
Key Takeaways for Exporting Entrepreneurs
âś… Always confirm your HS/NICS code before building a strategy
âś… Use state-level data when your product has strong regional identity (e.g., wine from Napa)
âś… Consider PIERS or similar platforms for highly specific company and buyer data
✅ Service providers can export too—especially in education, training, and digital content
âś… Black Tech Link can help you match grants (like STEP) with the right trade shows and funding partners
“From Schedule B to market mapping to grant support, this work starts with information—but ends in impact.”
