Lithium: The Real World Vibranium

Most of us have heard of the fictional natural resource called Vibranium made known through the Marvel Comic Universe. If you’re not a fan boy or girl of Black Panther, Vibranium is the natural resource which provides power and economic infrastructure for the fictional African nation of Wakanda. Vibranium also makes up Captain America’s shield and The Winter Soldier’s indestructible metal arm. 

Although the non-existent precious metal, Vibranium, has fueled many debates surrounding natural resources discovery and the implications of economic and community development, the real world discovery of Lithium minerals in the Salton Sea, California have sparked conversations surrounding innovation, business development, job creation, and career opportunities. Lithium powers electric vehicles, cell phones, manufacturing equipment and more. As California is heading towards a Lithium Gold Rush, the question is which communities will have access to the spoils of discovery.
